Depending on the type and wear of your dentures – on average, every five to seven years. If you get the precision denture and follow up with the recall and re-care services at our office, the denture should be good for 8 to 10 years.

Dentures should be removed nightly and soaked in water with a denture cleaner. You should never use toothpaste on your dentures, instead brush them with the denture brush and denture soap. You should also see your denturist annually for a professional cleaning.

It is normal to develop sore spots as your new dentures settle into place. However, your denturist will book a follow-up appointment after the insertion since dentures may need fine tuning before they fit correctly. Remember to wear your dentures 24 hours before an adjustment appointment.

Speech: when you get new dentures, it’s common to have difficulty with speech. In some cases, this may take a while to get used to it. You should practice speaking or reading aloud to adjust more quickly.

Size: Your old denture will be quite worn down and because of this your new denture may feel like a mouthful. Don’t worry; again, this is something that will feel natural soon. However, we can help you choose the shade, shape and size of the teeth and you have opportunity to see and approve it at the try-in appointment before the dentures are completely adjusted.

Gag Reflex: In some cases, patients with a sensitive gag reflex can have the feeling of gagging with their upper dentures in. This can take some time to get used to.

Eating: Now that your chewing function has been restored, you will have to learn to bite and chew in a slightly different way. Start slowly, by cutting food into small pieces and chewing with both sides of your teeth.
