Immediate Complete Denture

ADVANTAGES:

1. The denture acts like band-aid. It applies constant pressure on the extraction sites, providing protection from debris (food, bacteria…) entering the socket and promotes healing at a faster rate and prevents infection. It may also help reduce bleeding and pain.
2. May maintain the appearance of the patient. Patient can have a set of dentures on the same day following the extraction of natural teeth.
3. Allows tongue and surrounding tissue to get used to wearing the dentures much sooner. It also aids in speaking and eating.
4. Teeth are arranged in close position of natural teeth with the same measurement of the natural teeth height.

DISADVANTAGES:

1. Requires more appointments during post-insertion visits for reline or rebase due to gum shrinkage.
2. More expensive, especially due to unpredictable relining and may need to be remade.
3. Immediate dentures don’t allow clients to try the trial dentures to assess for esthetic value. Esthetic is evaluated during insertion appointment.
4. Patients may see more differences compared with their natural teeth.
5. The denture is temporary following extractions. It must be finalized by a permanent reline or new denture due to bone resorption.

1. Patient should NOT remove the dentures for 24 hours after extraction of natural teeth.
2. Follow the post-operative home care instructions by the dentist (for example: NO smoking or drinking alcohol for 24 hours after extraction, don’t use straw to drink…)
3. Take antibiotics a week before you see the dentist for extraction to prevent infection (prescriptions given by dentist).
